Removals from the UK to Spain
The busiest route out of Britain and the one with the most predictable failures. None of them is about driving. Two are documents and one is a decision nobody made in time.
Almost nothing goes wrong on this route that was not foreseeable at the survey.
Who takes this route
- Retirements to the Costa Blanca, the Costa del Sol and inland Andalucía, usually a full household.
- Work relocations to Madrid and Barcelona with a start date somebody else has set.
- Second-property owners on the Mediterranean coast moving part-loads in both directions.
The road out
Whatever the British origin, the load converges on the M20 and crosses on the Eurotunnel shuttle at Folkestone. For Spain the shuttle is almost always right: the whole of France lies ahead and the driver needs the hours intact.
Beyond Calais the A26 and A10 run south past Paris and Tours to Bordeaux, then the A63 to the border at Irún. Past there the AP-1 and AP-68 head inland for Madrid, or the AP-7 follows the coast through Catalonia to Valencia, Alicante and Murcia. Andalucía continues south of Madrid on the A-4.

Customs, and the file that goes wrong
Spain applies transfer-of-residence relief on used household effects, and asks for more supporting documentation than most. This is where the route's first predictable failure sits: the file is not a formality and it cannot be assembled while a vehicle waits at a border.

The downsize nobody planned for
The second predictable failure on this route is not a document. A very large share of Spanish moves are also downsizes, and treating them as one exercise is how people end up freighting a full British household across a continent in order to sell half of it at the other end.
The order that works is: ship what you are certain about, hold the rest in listed storage here, and decide once you can see the Spanish rooms. It costs a holding period and it is consistently cheaper than the alternative.
The third is climate, and it belongs at the survey rather than in a complaint afterwards. Waxed and oiled furniture, glued veneers and upholstery chosen for a British winter all behave differently in an Andalucian summer, and we would rather say so than invoice you for the freight.

- What goes wrong most often on this route?
- The NIE, by a distance. It is needed for the relief, it takes time to obtain, and a move planned without it becomes a move waiting on it.
- Should we downsize before or after shipping?
- Before, for anything you are sure about. Ship what you know you want, hold the rest here, and decide with the Spanish rooms in front of you.
- Is a shared load worth it?
- For anything short of a full house, usually. Less to pay, departing when the vehicle fills rather than on a date you pick.
- Are UK appliances worth taking?
- Spain runs the continental plug and voltage standard. Adaptors are needed and large white goods rarely repay the space on a run that long.
- Can goods be held here while the NIE comes through?
- Yes, and it is the standard sequence rather than a fallback. Collect on the date that is certain, list everything, and ship when the file is complete.
- What about garden things?
- Soil, plant material and some garden chemicals are restricted, and an unwashed pot can hold up a whole load. Anything with fuel in it is refused outright.
