Reached through Spain, which makes it the longest overland run we do — and the one where the far end most reliably arrives later than anybody planned. That is not a complaint about Portugal; it is a planning fact to build around.
On this route the gap in the middle is the norm. Plan for it and nothing goes wrong.

- Second-home owners around Porto and the north, running part-loads both ways.
The road out
The M20 and the Folkestone shuttle, then the length of France and the width of Spain. On a run this long the shuttle earns its place by handing the driver a full set of hours rather than spending them on a deck.
Down through France on the A26, A10 and A63 to Irún, then across northern Spain. Porto and the north are reached on the A-52 and A-55 by way of Vigo; Lisbon and the Algarve either through Salamanca and the border at Vilar Formoso, or lower down via Badajoz onto the A6, with the A2 carrying the load south.

Portugal wants a tax number and a certificate of baggage alongside the usual inventory. The certificate is the document that most often stops a load on this route, and it is the first predictable failure to design out.

Collect on the date that is certain
The British end of this route has a fixed date: a completion, a lease end, a day you must be out. The Portuguese end frequently has no date at all, or one that moves.
So the sequence that prevents the complaint is simple. Collect here on the day that is fixed, list everything as it loads, hold it, and ship when Portugal is genuinely confirmed. It costs a holding period and it removes the alternative entirely — a loaded vehicle waiting somewhere expensive on a notary.
The third predictable failure is doorways. Older Algarve and Alentejo houses have deep walls, small windows and openings that predate modern furniture. Take a tape to the entrance, the turn and the stair at the viewing; three numbers, and they change what is worth shipping.

- What goes wrong most often here?
- The certificate of baggage, and the assumption that the Portuguese completion will happen when it was said it would. Both are designed out by starting the file early and collecting to the British date.
- Do you go through Spain?
- There is no other overland way, which is why this is the longest drive on the site and why part-loads are so common on it.
- Can you hold our things while the purchase completes?
- Yes, and on this route it is close to standard rather than a contingency.
- Will our furniture fit an Algarve villa?
- Send the width of the entrance, the turn beyond it and the stair if there is one. Deep walls and modest openings are the norm in older properties there.
- Do you cover Madeira or the Azores?
- Both are reached by sea, which puts them outside what a road firm does. Tell us what you are planning and we will either be straight that it is not us, or name somebody who handles it properly.
- Are electricals worth taking?
- Small ones, sometimes. Portugal is on the continental plug and voltage standard, and a washing machine or range cooker almost never repays the space over that distance.
